The Voting Rights Act of 1975 extended the Voting Rights Act of 1965. The 1975 act made permanent a national ban on using literacy tests as a qualification for voting. It also extended for seven more years the rules of the previous acts, such as registering minority voters and discouraging poll taxes. The act expanded the focus of the Voting Rights of 1965 to include American Indians, Asian Americans, and Hispanics. The 1975 act required that voting forms be printed in languages other than English. These changes enabled many more minorities to vote and encouraged minorities to run for public office. The requirements in the act were extended in 1982.
